Georgiana Spencer

It has been so long since women don't have to worry about important issues such as, education, marriage or voting,  at least in Europe. But as we know, having these kind of rights was not common for women in certain periods of history. For instance, in the 18th Century in England, women were not allowed either to own properties or to vote. Neither could they express  their opinions freely. However, aganist the strict social preassures they developed their own way to let people know their thoughts and so reflected their nonconformity. For example, the Duchess of Devonshire was well-known for her extravagant dresses and hats, and even though she could not participate in elections, the Duchess was the first woman to campaing for a candidate in 1784. She became quite active in politics and was certainly one of the most famous personalities of her time.

Thanks to women like Georgiana Spencer, best-known as The Duchess of  Devonshire, considerable changes were possible. But, nowadays, we still haven't overcome some gender inequality.

Wollstone........What?

Perhaps, after checking the name of the blog out you may have thought Wollston.....What? What is that? Or Who is that? And why has she chosen this name? Just in case it had happened to you, I am going to answer all these questions.

Mary Wollstonecraft was her full name. She was an English writer and a revolutionary promoter of equal rights for women. Wollstonecraft called for equality and justice in both sexes within the law and education. She also claimed for women's right to parliamentary representation. She is best known for publishing A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). Mary was an inspiration for the nineteenth-century and twentieth-century women's movements. Definetly, she played an important role in the history of women's rights. Nowadays, we are luckily far more sensitive to issues of gender than before and this is partly thanks to figures such as Wollstonecraft. That is why I have chosen her name for this blog.

I hope you enjoy it, even though I am a new blogger!
